Village of Belmont

Located in picturesque Lafayette County, with its two mounds, it is easy to see how Belmont came by its name, "Belle Monte," French for "beautiful hill." Belmont was the first capitol of the Wisconsin Territory; and the territorial legislature met here for 46 days in 1836. Wisconsin's first newspaper west of Milwaukee, the Belmont Gazette, began weekly publication when the session opened on October 25, 1836 and ran its last issue on April 12, 1837 after Madison was selected as the permanent capital. A new Belmont was established on the rail line 3 miles to the south of Old Belmont.

Modern Belmont is a quaint town of 823; surrounded by rolling hills and scenic farms. Belmont boasts a vibrant business community which includes two French specialty cheese factories and one of the area's largest greenhouse operations. Entertainment isn't difficult to find in Belmont as each September Belmont hosts the state's oldest free fair, which originated in 1915. In addition, recreation can be found year round at Bond Park, the Pecatonica State Trail, and Lake Joy. There is plenty to see and do in Belmont.
